ASQ Certification Opportunities

The American Society for Quality offers certification programs for a wide range of quality professions. The Greater Fort Worth Section 1416 administers the exams locally and offers preparation classes (see CLASSES on the menu).

CQIA - The Certified Quality Improvement Associate has a basic knowledge of quality tools and their uses and is involved in quality improvement projects, but doesn't necessarily come from a traditional quality area. CQIA requires TWO years of general work experience or an associate degree as a minimum.

CQA - The Certified Quality Auditor is a professional who understands the standards and principles of auditing and the auditing techniques of examining, questioning, evaluating and reporting to determine a quality system’s adequacy and deficiencies. The Certified Quality Auditor analyzes all elements of a quality system and judges its degree of adherence to the criteria of industrial management and quality evaluation and control systems. CQA requires EIGHT years of higher education and/or work experience including THREE years in a decision-making position.

CQE - The Certified Quality Engineer is a professional who understands the principles of product and service quality evaluation and control. This body of knowledge and applied technologies include, but are not limited to, development and operation of quality control systems, application and analysis of testing and inspection procedures, the ability to use metrology and statistical methods to diagnose and correct improper quality control practices, an understanding of human factors and motivation, facility with quality cost concepts and techniques, and the knowledge and ability to develop and administer management information systems and to audit quality systems for deficiency identification and correction. CQE requires EIGHT years of higher education and/or work experience including THREE years in a decision-making position.

CMQ/OE - The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence is a professional who leads and champions process-improvement initiatives—everywhere from small businesses to multinational corporations—that can have regional or global focus in a variety of service and industrial settings. A Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence facilitates and leads team efforts to establish and monitor customer/supplier relations, supports strategic planning and deployment initiatives, and helps develop measurement systems to determine organizational improvement. The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence should be able to motivate and evaluate staff, manage projects and human resources, analyze financial situations, determine and evaluate risk and employ knowledge management tools and techniques in resolving organizational challenges. CMQ/OE requires 10 years of higher education and/or work experience including FIVE years in a decision-making position.

CQT - The Certified Quality Technician is a paraprofessional who, in support of and under the direction of quality engineers or supervisors, analyzes and solves quality problems, prepares inspection plans and instructions, selects sampling plan applications, prepares procedures, trains inspectors, performs audits, analyzes quality costs and other quality data, and applies fundamental statistical methods for process control. CQT requires FOUR years of higher education and/or work experience.

CSQE - The Certified Software Quality Engineer understands software quality development and implementation, software inspection, testing, verification and validation; and implements software development and maintenance processes and methods. CSQE requires EIGHT years of higher education and/or work experience including THREE years in a decision-making position.

CSSBB - The Certified Six Sigma Black Belt is a professional who can explain Six Sigma philosophies and principles, including supporting systems and tools. A Black Belt should demonstrate team leadership, understand team dynamics and assign team member roles and responsibilities. Black Belts have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the DMAIC model in accordance with Six Sigma principles. They have basic knowledge of Lean enterprise concepts, are able to identify non-value-added elements and activities and are able to use specific tools. CSSBB requires two completed projects with signed affidavits or one project with signed affidavit and three years of work experience. No education waivers are given.

CSSGB - The Certified Six Sigma Green Belt operates in support of or under the supervision of a Six Sigma Black Belt, analyzes and solves quality problems and is involved in quality improvement projects. A Green Belt is someone with at least three years of work experience who wants to demonstrate his or her knowledge of Six Sigma tools and processes. CSSGB requires THREE years of work experience.

CQI - The Certified Quality Inspector is an inspector who, in support of and under the direction of quality engineers, supervisors, or technicians, can use the proven techniques included in the body of knowledge. Under professional direction, the Quality Inspector evaluates hardware documentation, performs laboratory procedures, inspects products, measures process performance, records data and prepares formal reports. CQI requires TWO years of work experience. If you do not have a high school diploma or GED, you must have THREE additional years' work experience.

CRE - The Certified Reliability Engineer is a professional who understands the principles of performance evaluation and prediction to improve product/systems safety, reliability and maintainability. This body of knowledge (BOK) and applied technologies include, but are not limited to, design review and control; prediction, estimation, and apportionment methodology; failure mode effects and analysis; the planning, operation and analysis of reliability testing and field failures, including mathematical modeling; understanding human factors in reliability; and the ability to develop and administer reliability information systems for failure analysis, design and performance improvement and reliability program management over the entire product life cycle. CRE requires EIGHT years of higher education and/or work experience including THREE years in a decision-making position.

CCT - The Certified Calibration Technician tests, calibrates, maintains and repairs electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, analytical and electronic measuring, recording and indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established standards. CCT requires FIVE years of on-the-job experience.

CHA - The Certified HACCP Auditor is a professional who understands the standards and principles of auditing a HACCP-based (or process-safety) system. A HACCP Auditor uses various tools and techniques to examine, question, evaluate and report on that system’s adequacy and deficiencies. The HACCP Auditor analyzes all elements of the system and reports on how well it adheres to the criteria for management and control of process safety. CHA requires FIVE years of on-the-job experience.

CBA - The Certified Biomedical Auditor is a professional who understands the principles of standards, regulations, directives and guidance for auditing a biomedical system while using various tools and techniques to examine, question, evaluate and report on that system's adequacy and deficiencies. A biomedical auditor analyzes all elements of the system and reports on how well it adheres to the criteria for management and control of process safety. CBA requires FIVE years of work experience including ONE year in a decision-making position.

CQPA - The Certified Quality Process Analyst is a paraprofessional who, in support of and under the direction of quality engineers or supervisors, analyzes and solves quality problems and is involved in quality improvement projects. A Certified Quality Process Analyst may be a recent graduate or someone with work experience who wants to demonstrate his or her knowledge of quality tools and processes. CQPA requires TWO years of general work experience or an associate degree as a minimum.

All work experience must relate to one or more areas of the body of knowledge of that specific certification.


If you have completed a degree, diploma, or certificate program beyond high school, you may waive some of the required experience as follows:
1 year Certificate/diploma from a technical or trade school
2 years Associate Degree (college/tech institute) 1 year: CBA, CHA
4 years Bachelor's degree 3 years: CQT, CHA, CBA
5 years Master's/doctoral degree 3 years: CQT 4 years: CBA, CHA

PROCTORS - ALL current certification holders welcomed. Re-Certification Units (RU's) earned per day (0.5). Please arrive by 7 a.m. You must sign in at Security (inside building).

PROCTOR RESTRICTIONS - per ASQ policy: "You may not apply for any of the certifications given during an exam offering you are proctoring for a period of twelve (12) months from the exam offering." "For no purpose may exams and related materials be retained, reproduced, or shared/disclosed to third parties (including other persons teaching, writing, or taking exam preparation courses)." If you teach the refresher, you cannot proctor the exam. Each proctor must sign a copy of the ASQ Certification Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest form.
